FedNor announces funding for $33 million art gallery in Thunder Bay

The Federal Economic Development Initiative for Northern Ontario (FedNor) has announced a $3.5 million contribution for the construction of a proposed new art gallery in Thunder Bay, Ontario.

The proposed 40,000 sq. ft., two-storey building is planned to be located south of the Spirit Garden, on Tugboat Basin. The facility would include an event hall overlooking Lake Superior, a cafe and a larger gift shop, CBC News reports.

The price tag for the new gallery is $33 million.

“It will be a two-year construction project,” gallery director Sharon Godwin told Canadian Art. “I would say it should be constructed in 2020/2021 and open in 2022.”

The new building design is by Patkau Architects and Brook McIlroy.
