A $120 million investment over the next 20 years is at the heart of the newly unveiled Timmins Victor M. Power Airport 2022-2042 Master Plan, which aims to expand infrastructure, enhance connectivity, and drive economic growth.

The plan, presented to city council, outlines strategic short-term, medium-term, and long-term priorities to accommodate increasing passenger traffic and support regional development.

As a key economic driver for Timmins and surrounding northern communities, including the west coast of James Bay, the airport plays a crucial role in facilitating business, trade, and connectivity.

The plan projects an annual passenger traffic growth of 1.1 per cent, potentially bringing total travelers through the Timmins Victor M. Power Airport to approximately 277,000 by 2041. To accommodate this growth, the airport will require upgrades and enhancements to infrastructure and facilities, as well as regulatory adjustments based on passenger volumes.

“The airport’s operations contribute an estimated $90 million in GDP and $200 million in total economic output to Ontario’s economy,” said Airport Manager Dave Dayment. “That impact is driven by reliable air service and infrastructure. With the expansion outlined in the master plan, these numbers are expected to increase as passenger traffic grows.

“The plan makes a strong case for investment from all levels of government to support population growth, industry, and economic development.”

Short-term projects such as parking improvements, equipment optimization, and façade upgrades will be prioritized. Medium-term efforts will focus on expanding the terminal, car park, and airside elements, while long-term recommendations feature runway extensions, lighting improvements, and the final development of commercial lands south of the airport.

“Many of the recommendations are contingent on reaching key passenger and air travel milestones,” Dayment added. “The airport master plan provides a comprehensive roadmap for where we are today and how strategic investments can drive future growth.”
