The City of Greater Sudbury is hosting a virtual consultation session on Jan. 16 at 7 p.m. with BuildingIN, a collaborative initiative aimed at addressing the housing supply challenge.

The theme of this session is Trade-offs and it will build on feedback from the first public session, which focused on developing a vision and direction for housing in Greater Sudbury.

BuildingIN has partnered with the city for a six-month program to develop a tailored strategy for certain Greater Sudbury neighbourhoods. The program is designed to align with the City’s Housing Supply Strategy by providing recommendations for multi-unit low-rise infill housing — the development of residential buildings with multiple housing units, such as townhouses, duplexes, triplexes or small apartment buildings. This approach transforms underused or vacant land into housing options.

The community consultation sessions will be held virtually via Zoom and feature group discussions, problem-solving and active listening. The second consultation will cover the following topics:

  • considering solutions,
  • understanding cause and effect,
  • clarifying outcomes and cumulative consequences, and
  • big picture decisions to meet targets.

The final consultation session will be held Feb. 13.

The BuildingIN initiative is a collaboration of housing professionals from non-profit organizations and private companies that helps municipalities review and establish a viable business model for multi-unit infill housing, supporting housing goals.

Rather than focusing on expansion (building outward) or high-density construction (building upward), the program enables municipalities to effectively “build in.”

The goal is to ensure housing growth integrates seamlessly into existing neighbourhoods.
