Hydro One has announced a major milestone in its $80 million project at the Porcupine Transformer Station (TS) with completion of a new high-voltage transformer. This upgrade is set to improve the reliability and resilience of the electricity network across Timmins and the surrounding northeast and northwest Ontario regions.
The Porcupine TS, a pivotal node connecting these regions, is undergoing significant enhancements aimed at strengthening the electricity grid. The arrival of this transformer marks the second of three critical components in the ongoing upgrade project, which includes a comprehensive overhaul of switches, system protection, and telecommunication equipment.
“As communities in northern Ontario continue to grow, it’s important to invest in the local electricity system to ensure reliable power for homes and businesses,” said Ryan Docherty, Vice President of Engineering and Construction Services at Hydro One. “Once this work is complete, it will enhance the connections between the northeast and northwest, supporting the region as it attracts more growth.”
The newly delivered transformer, which weighs over 205,000 kilograms, is part of a larger project to modernize and expand the infrastructure at Porcupine TS. The third and final transformer is scheduled to arrive in late 2025, completing the substantial upgrade aimed at meeting the increasing demands of the region.
“We appreciate Hydro One’s investment in critical infrastructure, as it will help to unlock the economic potential in our city,” said Timmins Mayor Michelle Boileau.”It is important that we continue to provide reliable electricity to our communities to support increased density.”
The upgrade is a crucial component in Hydro One’s broader strategy to enhance the province’s electricity grid, ensuring that it can meet future demands and support ongoing regional development. The project underscores Hydro One’s commitment to maintaining a robust and dependable power supply as northern Ontario continues to evolve and expand.
