The City of Greater Sudbury is updating its Water and Wastewater Master Plan to guide long-term infrastructure planning, support forecasted population growth and ensure safe, reliable water and wastewater services across all communities.
The study is being carried out under the Municipal Class Environmental Assessment (EA) process and is currently in Phases 1 and 2. These phases focus on identifying system needs, reviewing existing conditions and evaluating potential servicing solutions.
City officials say the master plan will establish a framework for future capital investment while improving system efficiency, resilience and reliability. It will also support financial planning, including development charges and updates to the official plan and , while ensuring ongoing regulatory compliance.
As part of the update, the City is examining its entire water and wastewater network, including treatment plants, storage facilities, booster stations, lift stations, watermains, sewers and forcemains. The study also considers key challenges such as system capacity, future demand and inflow and infiltration during major storm events—issues that have direct implications for infrastructure design and construction planning.
Public engagement is a key component of the process with one public meeting this fall and a second planned for early 2026 which will include a presentation of alternative solutions and a preferred long-term strategy
Feedback will be accepted for 30 days through an online comment form available on the project website. Input for Phase 1 is being accepted until 4:30 p.m. on Jan. 15, 2026, through Over to You, the City’s online engagement platform, at overtoyou.greatersudbury.ca.
Feedback from the first PIC will be used to refine and evaluate servicing alternatives. A preferred long-term strategy will be presented at PIC #2, with the final Water and Wastewater Master Plan to be posted online for public review once complete.
