After two years of construction, the Thunder Bay Correctional Complex project spearheaded by EllisDon, has reached significant milestones.
Since breaking ground, the project has seen a colossal 360,000 m³ of earth moved, setting the stage for the complex’s ambitious design. This massive undertaking has involved meticulous planning, with several kilometres of underground utilities installed to create a robust infrastructure network.
Recently completed achievements include the establishment of essential parking structures and roadways, paving the way for future infrastructure enhancements. A substantial concrete substructure of 19,000 m³ has been laid, providing a solid foundation for the facility. The steel framework of the complex, weighing an impressive 3,000 tonnes, now stands tall, symbolized by a beam-signing event that marked this milestone.
Visible progress continues with the erection of 1,600 precast panels across both the housing and central blocks, shaping the complex’s architectural presence. The roofing of the housing block has been completed, and the mobilization of the roofing contractor for the central block has begun. Over 400,000 sq ft of interior slab on grade is now finished, further propelling the project forward.
Looking ahead, EllisDon officials say the building enclosure will be completed by the end of 2024.
