The City of Greater Sudbury has unveiled the architectural renderings for its new Event Centre and officially launched construction of the long-awaited project.

John Schmalz, area manager at PCL Constructors Northern Ontario, said the company is proud to manage the project.

“We are committed to delivering a facility that meets the highest standards in design and performance, and that will serve as a vibrant hub for sports and culture,” he said. “From our team to the community, there’s a shared excitement about what the new Event Centre will mean for the city. We look forward to working alongside our partners to shape a future that celebrates community and connection.”

The ceremony took place on the grounds of the future centre, next to the original Sudbury Community Arena, and included a land blessing by an elder from Atikameksheng Anishnawbek. Representatives from local Indigenous communities were also in attendance, highlighting the cultural significance of the site.

“Today we’re unveiling more than just the design of a building, we’re unveiling a space that will act as a catalyst for downtown transformation, sparking new developments in housing, business, and culture, while creating good jobs and bringing our community together,” said Mayor Paul Lefebvre. “I want to recognize the architects for creating a design that reflects who we are as a community and gives us something we can all take pride in.”

Representatives from Brisbin Brook Beynon Architects, the design firm, and PCL Construction, the project’s construction manager, participated in a ceremonial puck drop to mark the start of construction.

“This building will truly be a community venue for all, to host a diverse calendar of live sport and entertainment events that will bring people together from across the region, and create indelible memories,” said Chris O’Rielly, a partner at Brisbin Brook Beynon.

The Event Centre will host sporting events, concerts and community gatherings and will be complemented by the Cultural Hub, a destination for arts, culture and innovation. Both buildings are part of the city’s Transformation Project and the Downtown Master Plan, which aim to create a vibrant, inclusive and thriving downtown core.Residents can follow project updates, timelines and engagement opportunities at www.greatersudbury.ca/transformation.
