Thunder Bay review designs for Victoriaville Mall redevelopment at open house today

Ontario Construction News staff writer

The City of Thunder Bay is holding open houses this week to review two potential designs for the area of Victoria Avenue and Syndicate Avenue.

The slated demolition of Victoriaville Mall in 2024 creates an opportunity for the city and Reimagine Victoriaville: Phase Two follows up on work from Phase One, which recommended demolishing the structure.

“We really want the public to weigh in on the proposed look and feel of a redeveloped Victoria Avenue,” said Joel DePeuter, director – development services.

“This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to help reshape a portion of downtown Fort William. Input from the public will help us determine how the street can be designed to encourage businesses, visitors and the public to best use the redeveloped outdoor space.”

Colliers is leading the project with a team that includes KGS Group (engineers), Scatliff + Miller + Murray (landscape architects and public engagement specialists), i4 Architecture (architects), and Sever Lupu (construction cost consultants).

Phase 1 of Reimagine Victoriaville concluded in October 2020. During this first phase of the project the City of Thunder Bay explored possible options for a revitalized Victoriaville that are economically and programmatically sound and have broad community support. Four feasible options for the Centre were prepared and analyzed based on public input, stakeholder input, and evaluation criteria to decide on the future of Victoriaville Centre.

City staff, along with consultants KGS Group and Scatliff Miller Murray will host an open house at the Syndicate Avenue Parkette along Justice Avenue today (Tues., Aug. 9) from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m. The public will be able to view design concepts and speak with consultants and planning staff.

A second open house is scheduled for Wednesday, Aug. 10 from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Thunder Bay Country Market, being held at the Moose Hall, 434 Fort William Road.

The open houses will encourage feedback on two specific designs and help determine how the public would like to see the redeveloped public space used. Stakeholders in the Victoriaville area, including business and property owners, have already taken part in consultations on how to redevelop the area.
