The Ontario government has approved Hydro One’s plan to build a new 260-km transmission line to meet the growing energy demand in Timmins and surrounding areas. The line, which will run from the Wawa Transformer Station to the Porcupine Transformer Station, is set to be operational by 2030.

The new infrastructure is part of the province’s effort to address rising electricity demand in northeastern Ontario, where consumption is expected to grow by 540 megawatts (MW) by 2035, a 28% increase, according to the Ontario Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO). This demand is driven by growing industries in the region, including mining and manufacturing.

The Ontario government has designated the Wawa to Porcupine transmission line as a provincial priority, expediting the regulatory approval process with the Ontario Energy Board (OEB). Hydro One was selected as the developer following a thorough evaluation process, which included consultations with local communities, stakeholders, and Indigenous groups.

“We are pleased this project will support sustainable growth in Northeastern Ontario,” said Mike Garcia, CEO of Algoma Steel. “The new transmission line is critical for our transition to Electric Arc Furnace technology and our goal to produce cleaner, more energy-efficient steel.”

In addition to supporting industrial growth, the transmission line project includes opportunities for Indigenous communities to invest in the infrastructure. Hydro One is working with First Nations and Métis communities on early planning and partnership opportunities, including the option for First Nations to acquire a 50% equity stake in the transmission line once construction is completed.

“This project will provide significant benefits to our communities,” said Jason Batise, Executive Director of the Wabun Tribal Council. “We are proud to partner with Hydro One on this important initiative, which will improve transmission capacity and support the growing energy needs of the region.”

The Wawa to Porcupine transmission line is part of Ontario’s broader energy strategy, which includes expanding energy infrastructure to meet future demand, advancing clean energy projects, and keeping costs down for consumers. Other components of the plan include investments in nuclear energy, energy efficiency programs, and a major procurement of clean energy resources.

The new transmission line is expected to be a key factor in supporting industrial growth in sectors like electric vehicle manufacturing and clean steel production, while ensuring reliable and affordable energy for communities in northeastern Ontario.
