The Province of Ontario and Aroland First Nation Chief Sonny Gagnon have signed a historic shared prosperity agreement aimed at upgrading infrastructure in Northern Ontario.
The agreement includes significant investments in vital infrastructure, such as upgrades to Anaconda and Painter Lake Roads, which are key links to the Ring of Fire — a rich mineral deposit in the region. The agreement also lays the groundwork for future partnerships with other First Nations communities along the proposed routes to the Ring of Fire.
“With the risk of U.S. tariffs, it’s never been more important for us to work together to keep our economy competitive,” said Premier Doug Ford. “Unlocking the economic potential of the Ring of Fire region will transform Northern Ontario with new jobs, growth, and opportunities.
“I’m grateful to Chief Sonny Gagnon and Aroland First Nation for their partnership as we sign this historic agreement.”
The agreement is expected to create long-term prosperity for Aroland and broader Northern Ontario through strategic investments and partnerships, which include:
- Upgrades to Anaconda and Painter Lake Roads: These roads connect to vital infrastructure links, including Highway 643 and the future Marten Falls Community Access Road. The upgrades will improve access to the Ring of Fire and may involve the creation of a Road Advisory Body to help guide the work.
- $70 million for Greenstone Electricity Transmission Line: This funding will support route planning and design for the Greenstone Electricity Transmission Line, working alongside Aroland First Nation and other regional First Nations.
- Support for Aroland’s economic opportunities: Aroland First Nation is exploring the possibility of developing a transload facility and hosting a smelter. Ontario has committed to supporting the community in evaluating these opportunities.
- $20 million for community infrastructure projects: This funding will support business development and improve community well-being, while preparing Aroland for economic activities related to mineral development in the region. An additional $2.27 million will go toward creating a comprehensive community plan.
Economic benefits sharing: Ontario, Aroland First Nation, and potentially other nearby First Nations will enter discussions about sharing the economic benefits from forestry and mining operations in the area.
Infrastructure partnerships with First Nations are vital for advancing mining operations, including those at Greenstone Gold Mine and the Ring of Fire, while ensuring long-term prosperity for First Nations communities in Ontario’s northern region.
The Shared Prosperity Agreement is a key step in Ontario’s efforts to strengthen its economy and build lasting relationships with First Nations communities.
