SUDBURY — Greater Sudbury saw steady residential construction in the first half of 2025, with 603 permits issued for new homes. During the same period, 164 permits were issued for industrial, commercial, and institutional projects, representing more than $98 million in construction value. Across all sectors, the total construction value of permitted projects exceeded $166 million.
The city’s population is estimated at nearly 192,000 in the census metropolitan area, according to Statistics Canada. To support growth, Greater Sudbury has introduced two new immigration pilot programs — the Rural Community Immigration Pilot (RCIP) and the Francophone Community Immigration Pilot (FCIP) — and is running the Move to Sudbury campaign to attract skilled workers.
Health care expansion has also been a focus, with new facilities and 25 additional medical professionals added to the local workforce.
Downtown revitalization projects are ongoing, including preliminary site work for the Event Centre and planned construction this fall for the Cultural Hub at Tom Davies Square.
